Introduction (National Youth Day in India)

National Youth Day is celebrated on January 12 every year on the birthday of Swami Vivekananda. The Indian Government decided in 1984 because they wanted young people from India to follow Swami Vivekananda’s ideal principles, think positively and strategically to develop the country.

The Indian Government’s reference statement was: ” Swamiji’s philosophy and ideals for which he lived and worked were thought to be a great source of inspiration for Indian youth.” This is how National Youth Day is celebrating since 1985, on January 12 each year.     

History of National Youth Day

On January 12, 1863, Swami Vivekananda was born to a wealthy family in Calcutta. In his early life, he was known as Narendra Nath Datta. He was a student of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and a colossal philosopher more as a motivation for youth, the embodiment of Indian ethnicity and cunning.

He was interested in spirituality and began to meditate from an early age. He was an avid reader and used to read a variety of topics, including philosophy, religion, history, social sciences, art, and literature. He was also interested in Hindu writings. Swami Vivekananda was versatile. In addition to being good at learning, he was also trained in Indian classical music and was also a good athlete.

Swami Vivekanand played a significant role in introducing the Indian philosophy of yoga and Vedanta to the Western world. After the 1893 speech in the World Religion Parliament in Chicago, he was named “Messenger of Indian Wisdom to the Western World”. It is seen as a significant force in bringing Hinduism to the rank of important world religion in the late nineteenth century.

Swami Vivekananda is known for his spiritual conversations related to culture. He was very interested in planning youth associations and tasks related to renewable youth. So this day is an ideal opportunity to remember this legend. His principles were an essential source of recognition for young people, not only in India but also around the world.    

Swami Vivekananda has inspired millions of young people in his age and continues to do so today. The Government considered Vivekananda’s philosophy and ideals to be an excellent source of inspiration for Indian youth. In 1984, the Indian Government said: ” Swamiji’s philosophy and ideals for which he lived and worked were thought to be a great source of inspiration for Indian youth.”

Vivekananda died at a young age of 39, changed several lives. He drew inspiration from the Indian spiritual tradition and his guru, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa. Lectures of Swami Vivekanand motivated many young people and the organization. His ideas were collected in the book “The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda.”             

Celebration

Swami Vivekananda’s birthday is celebrated every year in many centers in the Ramakrishna Madh and Ramakrishna Mission. On this occasion magnificent mangal aarti, religious songs, meditation, religious speech, as well as sandhya aarti performs during the celebration of Swami Vivekananda’s birthday.                  

National Youth Day is celebrating in schools and colleges where various activities take places, such as parades, speeches, narratives, songs, youth conferences, colloquium, yogis, awards, essay writing competition, music, speeches, recitations, processions, sports, presentations for seminars and games, etc.

The writings and lectures of Swami Vivekananda, deriving their stimulation from the Indian spiritual custom and the broad point of view of his Master Sri Ramakrishna, are the basis of stimulation. It provokes several youth associations, scientific associations and conducts youth projects.  

Mission Bhartiyam organizes a two-day event for all ages in Uttar Pradesh. This event includes several activities called Basti Yuvo Mahotsav and the day celebrates by the Government, non-profit organizations and corporate groups in their way.       

The celebration of this event starts early in the morning pooja Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, and Swami Ramakrishna Paramhansa. Great pohuki performs pooja by monks and devotees. Then the devotees offer pushpanjali and aarti to the statue of Swami Vivekananda. Finally, Prasad distribute.

On this occasion, further various activities are taking place in India to promote young people in the fields of education, art, culture, and hoping to generate moral values ​​through the enlightenment of the inner soul. On this occasion, Mission Bhartiyam organizes a two-day big event in Uttar Pradesh, India for young people, where are several classes for all ages. The event calls BASTI YUVA MAHOTSAV.

Vivekananda’s “unforgettable” speech

On September 11, 1893, Swami Vivekananda created history by giving the lecture in the World Religion Parliament in Chicago.

He said: “It fills my heart with unspeakable joy to rise in response to the warm and cordial greeting you have given us. Thank you on behalf of the oldest monk order in the world. In addition to schools, colleges, and government-organized events, National Youth Day celebrates with great joy and enthusiasm in many Ramakrishna Mission centers.  The influence of the visionary thinker is that the day is celebrated not only in India but also internationally.

In Canada, the Vedanta Society in Toronto is celebrating the day to spread Vedanta’s message as the oldest religious philosophy in the world. The speeches, quotes, and teachings of Swami Vivekananda are still inspiring millions. National Youth Day is a way of expressing gratitude and remembering the ideals of the great thinker.                           

The philosophies, teachings, and ideas of Swami Vivekananda are the high cultural and traditional assets of India. Youth is an essential part of the country that leads the country, which is why young people are chosen first as inspired by the ideas and principles of Swami Vivekananda.
